Only in Los Angeles where you can get a parody store: Dumb Starbucks is based on the actual Starbucks, the “fake” baristas gave away free coffee until they ran out, according to news reports. Located in a strip mall next to a laundromat, the shop reportedly mimics the Starbucks menu, but places the word “dumb” in front of every product. The store looks nearly identical to a typical Starbucks location — though it lacks the free Wi-Fi — with tumblers and CDs, including “Dumb Jazz Standards,” on display. Drinks are served in cups that mock the company’s logo, while pastries are pulled from display cases straight from their Vons packaging. The menu features such offerings as Dumb Iced Coffee, Dumb Frappuccinos and Wuppy Duppy Latte.
“We appreciate the humor but they can’t use our name,” Starbucks spokesman Jim Olson told CNNMoney. “It’s a protected trademark. It’s our trademark.” Attempts to contact representatives of Dumb Starbucks were unsuccessful. Dumb Starbucks is located in the uber-hipster Los Felix neighborhood of Los Angeles, rumors have circulated that whoever started this store will soon open one in New York but being that the actual Starbucks has an army of corporate lawyers ready to file a cease and desist order, we speculate that there is only a small amount of time before this parody store is shut down. But for the time being, for those in the neighborhood, enjoy the dumb Starbucks for those in the area.
